Anne Hathaway Responds To Mary Poppins Rumors

While promoting The Intern, Entertainment Tonight pointed out to Anne Hathaway (The Dark Knight Rises) that oddsmakers currently consider her the favorite to play Mary Poppins in Disney's recently-announced film, which will be directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago). Even her co-star Robert De Niro thought she would be perfect for the role when he first heard the announcement.

Hathaway seemed humbled by the notion and by her co-star's endorsement, though, she thinks Emily Blunt (Edge of Tomorrow), who is rumored to be the frontrunner and co-starred in The Devil Wears Prada with Hathaway, is the actress to beat. "Well, I feel like she's going to get it, she's British," she remarked.

Hathaway certainly has the acting and singing chops to pull off the role. She earned an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2012's Les Misérables due in large part to her singing ability. Plus, Hathaway already played Mary Poppins in Saturday Night Live's "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" sketch back in 2008. Which you can view by clicking here.

The new Mary Poppins film won't be a remake of 1964 classic, that starred Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. It will be a follow-up to it and be based on the remaining seven installments of P.L. Travers' Mary Poppins series of children's books.
