Walt Disney Studios announced earlier today that Marvel's The Avengers officially crossed $600 million domestically today; it's the third-highest grossing motion picture of all time domestically and the fourth worldwide and the highest-grossing film ever distributed by Disney. The Avengers opened on May 4 with a $207 million weekend, the highest opening of all time for any film by a wide margin, and has gone on to set dozens of box office records in the last two months. It only recently fell behind the pace of Avatar, the highest-grossing film of all time, and was the fastest film in history to reach the $200-, $300-, $400- and $500-million marks. Joss Whedon, who directed the film, also slides into second place in the director category; both of the films ahead of The Avengers on the all-time charts (Titanic and Avatar) were directed by the same man, James Cameron. The film is one of only a dozen movies ever to gross a $1 billion globally, and of those 12, five of them came from Disney. The others are Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's ChestAlice in Wonderland, Disney/Pixar's Toy Story 3, and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
