GameNGuide

is reporting that a video game based on the movie version of The Avengers is in development, with an announcement to come soon, and speculates that The Dark Knight Rises may not be far behind. Playdom is reportedly handling The Avengers for Xbox and PlayStation platforms, but even that may not be all. "We launched Marvel: Avengers Alliance on Facebook; which is just the tip of the iceberg," the article quotes Marvel's VP of Games Production, TQ Jefferson, as saying in an interview with Forbes. "This is the first in a much larger effort to support the Avengers franchise across not just one but multiple video game touch points. The Avengers are bigger than just one game, and we're planning to allow consumers to enjoy The Avengers regardless of their preference in gameplay style or platform. Look for more announcements in the weeks to come." In what seems to be an agreement with Jefferson's comments on the matter, The Avengers director Joss Whedon is quoted as saying, "Isn't there one?  I would assume there are many Avengers videogames." Months ago, a demo reel purporting to have been from a canceled Avengers video game surfaced on YouTube, seeming at the time to confirm for fans that Skrulls would appear in the movie. While its authenticity has never been verified, the fact that the initial videos were met with cease-and-desist letters from Marvel convinced many fans that they were legitimate. Some of that footage can be seen below. As far as The Dark Knight Rises is concerned, it's all speculation at this point, with the article citing the massive success of the Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City games. Batman Begins had a video game adaptation which was met with largely poor to middling reviews, while The Dark Knight's game was actually canceled in mid-production.
