Even though a reboot to the Ghostbusters franchise is well on its way, a threequel to the original film series still may happen.

At least, that's if original Ghostbuster Dan Aykroyd gets his way. Aykroyd, who co-wrote the first Ghostbusters and starred in both installments, recently spoke to Sirius XM Radio about the all-female reboot directed by Paul Feig, and how it might pave the way for a "conventional sequel."

"There's three drafts of the old concept [for Ghostbusters 3]that exists," Aykroyd told the radio show. "And we're going to be able to salvage some of it and use it. Yeah, we're gonna be able to use it some day. Let's get this one made and that will reinvigorate the franchise and then we'll go on to maybe doing a more conventional third sequel as we were planning and another idea I have for it."

Of course, getting another original Ghostbusters installment would take more than just the right script. Aykroyd's co-star Bill Murray has repeatedly refused past attempts to make another Ghostbusters sequel, and Harold Ramis, who played Egon Spengler, passed away last year.

But regardless of whether a new film on the old Ghostbusters happens, Aykroyd said he is pleased to just see Paul Feig deliver a strong interpretation on his paranormal hunters.

"I can tell you, as the originator, I'm very happy with what [Feig's] done. It's very tasteful. And it needed a reworking. The thing needed a new engine. You know? It needed new exhaust. It needed new steering. And this is what we're getting," Aykroyd said. "Now of course, he's got masters playing the roles for him, so this is going to really work in our favour for the third movie."
