Some of the anthropomorphic super-spies at the heart of the upcoming reboot of Danger Mouse will not be quite as you might remember them from the '80s.

That's because the series will feature some gender-swapped characters, reports The Guardian.

"Characters that might have been male in the past will now be female characters," CBBC controller Cheryl Taylor said during the recent Children's Media Conference.

This is part of a more general initiative by the BBC to include more female characters, particularly in key roles such as leads, hosts and narrators.

"Having seen the scripts, which are really whiz-bang, they've managed to retain that fantastic rather old-fashioned British humor as well as bringing something fresh," Taylor said.

Danger Mouse will debut in 2015 with a 52-episode season co-produced by FremantleMedia.
