Did Batman V. Superman Trailer Give Away Too Much?

So there's a new trailer for Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.

It's really the first "story" trailer that's been released, with the previous footage offered really jus focusing on the conflict between the two characters and telling audiences very little about what's actually happening in the film.

And, not unexpectedly, it's drawing criticism from some fans who think it showed too much.

It stands in contrast to the trailers for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which have been criticized for not giving fans enough information about the upcoming movie, and if you pay attention to this kind of thing, it basically reminds you that fans are basically never happy with anything, ever. But that's a whole different conversation.

So -- Spoilers On, obviously -- what did the Batman V Superman trailer really tell us, and was it too much?

Well, we know that the Batman/Superman conflict is driven by deep convictions on the part of Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne, but apparently pushed into the realm of the physical by Lex Luthor. We know that Lex seems to have two sides: a bouncy, playful public face and a more dark and sadistic side that at least Lois will see up close and personal.

And we see -- this is big -- that Lex gets custody of Zod's body and uses that access to genetically either modify the corpse or create a new life form, which is Doomsday -- and that threat will apparently united Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman...who seems to come out of nowhere.

Okay, that's a lot of information. Leaving aside the fact that all of it was either easily guessed or previously reported, we can acknowledge that it does give a bird's eye view of the plot.

And, yeah, it does seem like it's a lot of information.

There are a few things to consider, though:

What's Lex got to gain from all this? What's Wonder Woman's role?

There are a lot of questions left about the film, and other than the specifics that Lex is a bad guy (shocking, I know) and Doomsday's role, there wasn't really a lot of specific information revealed.

And even the Doomsday reveal is just an elaboration on earlier teasers that the battle would change as an even deadlier force came into play. Here's a synopsis that's been online for quite some time:

"Fearing the actions of a god-like super hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before."

Look, I'm not crazy about trailers that give away the whole story, either. But the reality is, this trailer gave away not much more or less than the average trailer. It's under scrutiny because the production is under scrutiny. People are complaining because...well, that's what people do. It's the Internet.
