The latest rumor to hit DC Entertainment's Cinematic Universe could be one cruel joke.

According to a new fan theory that's gaining considerable traction, Jared Leto's Joker may not be the original clown prince of crime, but a former boy wonder. That's right—some are now thinking that the Jason Todd/Robin from Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice didn't literally die in Zack Snyder's universe, but somehow transformed into the Joker.

The theory's evidence comes from the shot of Robin's costume in the Batman V. Superman trailer, and the publicity still of a shirtless Joker (above). If you look closely at both photos, you can see that Leto's Joker and the Robin costume both have puncture wounds on the left and right shoulder. While it's small detail to hang such a large theory on, but it does make some sense.

And when you think about it, the theory would explain how Leto's Joker looks years younger than Affleck's Batman, despite the two supposedly being mortal enemies for years and years. So, could it be possible that the original Joker seduced or mentally broke Robin into becoming a villain, figuratively "killing" him instead of literally? We would then assume that, somewhere down the line, the Joker then died, leaving the fractured Jason Todd to assume his mantle.

It wouldn't be the first time a Robin turned into the Joker. In the DC Animated Universe's Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, former Robin Tim Drake was brainwashed and manipulated into becoming the new Joker after the original Clown Prince perished. That's not to say Batman V. Superman will follow the storyline's footsteps, but that the concept isn't unprecedented.

So, do you think that Leto's Joker might be Robin, transformed? Let us know in the comments!
