Evidence Surfaces Of New Batman TV Series Called Gotham

Back when The Dark Knight Rises was released in movie theaters, Comicbook.com speculated that a spinoff similar to the Gotham Central comic book series would be a great idea. Then, in early August, ThinkMcFlyThink.com reported that Warner Bros. was actually developing a Gotham PD TV series. It was an interesting rumor at the time, but there was little evidence to back up their claims. However, two new trademark registrations for DC Comics Warner Communications Inc. have just popped up on the USPTO.gov website. On August 30, 2013, DC Comics filed a trademark for Gotham to cover "entertainment services in the nature of live-action, comedy, drama, animated and/or reality television programs; production of live-action comedy, drama, animated and/or reality television programs." DC Comics also filed to trademark Gotham for "downloadable live-action, comedy, drama, animated and reality television series; audio tapes, audio-video tapes, audio video cassettes, audio video discs, and digital versatile discs featuring music, comedy, drama, action, adventure, and/or animation." Now, before you think that DC Comics just files a whole bunch of random trademarks to protect their properties, companies are supposed to have some genuine intent to use to file a trademark. Other recent trademarks filed by DC Comics include Man Of Steel, Infinite Crisis, and Forever Evil, which DC Comics has indeed used in the exact categories where they filed for trademarks. According to ThinkMcFlyThink.com's original report, the Gotham PD TV series would be set between the events of The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, which was a time period when Batman disappeared. The series would revolve around the Gotham Police Department and Batman would not be featured, so it would essentially be a Batman TV series without Batman. Given that Warner Bros. is introducing a new Batman in the upcoming Batman Vs. Superman movie, it definitely makes sense that they might do a TV series that doesn't actually feature Batman. They could be planning to save Batman for the big screen, but Gotham could be a show in the vein of Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. The only thing that seems unusual about the rumor would be setting it in the Nolan universe, as it would probably make more sense for Warner Bros. to try to tie it into their new DC Cinematic Universe.
