Universal Pictures' Furious 7 sets new opening weekend record for the month of April and the best opening weekend for the Fast and Furious franchise.

Furious 7 grossed a whopping $143.6M this weekend, which makes its the best opening weekend for a film debuting in April. That dwarfs Marvel's Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which was the previous record holder for the month with $95M.

It's the best opening for any Fast and Furious film as 2013's Fast & Furious 6 had the record $97.3M. It's also the biggest opening for any movie since Lionsgate's 2013 film, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. The $143.6M opening is the ninth best opening at the North American box office - edging out The Twilight Saga: New Moon, which scored $142.8M in 2009.

The film received an 'A' CinemaScore, so you can expect the film to have legs with good word-of-mouth and repeat viewings.

Continuing the global exploits in the unstoppable franchise built on speed, Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson lead the returning cast of Fast & Furious 7. James Wan directs this chapter of the hugely successful series that also welcomes back favorites Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Elsa Pataky and Lucas Black. They are joined by international action stars new to the franchise including Jason Statham, Djimon Hounsou, Tony Jaa, Ronda Rousey and Kurt Russell. The film was written by Chris Morgan.

Furious 7 races into theaters April 3, 2015.
