HBO has released a new “Anatomy of a Scene” featurette breaking down Game of Thrones’ “Purple Wedding.”
Be warned that the video below contains spoilers for the Game of Thrones episode “The Lion and the Rose,” which aired this past Sunday.
In the featurette, producers D.B. Weiss and David Benioff and director Alex Graves discuss all the work and planning that went into making the royal wedding happen.
“The wedding staging was a huge challenge,” says Weiss. “It’s the first and last time we’ll ever have this many main characters in the same place at the same time.”
“It’s the massive scene which takes up about half the episode,” says Benioff. “In a movie, we probably would have had two weeks to shoot a scene that’s going to end up taking about 24 minutes of screen time, and we had to do it in four days.”
“I wanted it to be this beautiful, sunny day, something not very Game of Thrones,” says Graves. “Hopefully the audience will be thinking ‘something really bad is going to happen and I understand what it is, but I know its coming.’”
Game of Thrones airs Sunday nights on HBO.
