While Stannis Baratheon may have died on Brienne of Tarth's sword in Game of Thrones, author George R.R. Martin reminded fans yesterday that the last of the Baratheon brothers is still alive and kicking in his novels.
In response to a question about whether Stannis was alive or not on his LiveJournal, Martin responded "In my books? Alive, beyond a doubt."
In the latest novel in Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, A Dance with Dragons, Stannis' fate was unclear. Jon Snow received a letter from Ramsay Bolton declaring that Stannis had been routed and killed, but readers were never told if the letter was truth or a lie.
The truth was revealed in an excerpt from the still unreleased next installment of the series, The Winds of Winter. The excerpt, released in 2011 and told from the point-of-view of Theon Greyjoy, confirmed that Stannis was still alive and well and planning for battle with the Boltons.
Still no release date for The Winds of Winter. Game of Thrones will return for Season 6 in 2016.
