Hold on to your books, it looks like the RL Stine movie adaptation is getting another round on the big screen. The popular Goosebumps franchise was given a feature film in 2015, starring Jack Black as the author himself.
Sony announced today that a Goosebumps sequel is officially on the way. Not only that, but it's coming much sooner than anyone had predicted.
It looks like the sequel has been set to release on January 26, 2018.
Prepare to be goosed again...you know who you are. Sony's GOOSEBUMPS 2 is a go and drops January 26, 2018.— Exhibitor Relations (@ERCboxoffice) January 17, 2017
It's a bit surprising to see this release date attached to the movie for a couple of reasons.
First of all, that's only a year away. The studio is going to have to produce and edit the entire film in only 12 months - that's not a long time. Given the success of the first however, it can definitely be done.
Secondly, the January date doesn't exactly fit the haunting themes of the source material. The Goosebumps books are meant to be scary, but in the fun kind of way, and so the first film was released in theaters around Halloween.
Either way, this means a more Goosebumps are on the way from Sony and Jack Black. The actor was praised for his take on RL Stine in the first movie, and for having the ability to draw in both young and adult audiences.
Upset about moving from a big city to a small town, teenager Zach Cooper (Dylan Minnette) finds a silver lining when he meets the beautiful girl, Hannah (Odeya Rush), living right next door. But every silver lining has a cloud, and Zach's comes when he learns that Hannah has a mysterious dad who is revealed to be R. L. Stine (Jack Black), the author of the bestselling Goosebumps series. It turns out that there is a reason why Stine is so strange… he is a prisoner of his own imagination – the monsters that his books made famous are real, and Stine protects his readers by keeping them locked up in their books. When Zach unintentionally unleashes the monsters from their manuscripts and they begin to terrorize the town, it's suddenly up to Stine, Zach, and Hannah to get all of them back in the books where they belong.
