Guardians of the Galaxy: Bendis Giving Star-Lord Daddy Issues

Marvel Comics recently invited Gahl Buslov, one of the buyers for Midtown Comics, over to their New York offices to take a look at, and review, the first issue of Thanos Rising as well as the first two issues of both Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy. It's Guardians, with a movie coming soon, that will of course get the most play in the Marvel NOW! Cosmic launch. And it's there that one of Buslov's comments really sticks out. The Point One issue, which retells the origin of Star-Lord, will apparently have a bit of revisionist history behind it and we'll apparently get a version of the character whose relationship with his father is a bit tortured. (Maybe Geoff Johns collaborated on that script.) Here's the excerpt from Buslov's review:

Issue #0.1 provides the full (and revised) back story on Peter Quill, better known as Star-Lord, leader of the Guardians. I can't say much without really ruining the entire issue, so let's just leave it at it's a good origin story, especially if you don't know much about him and even if you think you do, it'll probably be good to read this updated take on it (especially since it explains why he's not a big fan of his dad).

A retelling of his origin makes sense, as Star-Lord has been billed in promotional materials for the film as basically THE star of Guardians of the Galaxy, with the other members of the team playing second fiddle. Whether or not that's an accurate depiction of the script will have to wait until somebody has actually seen the film to decide, but it wouldn't be shocking if this reimagined origin tied in with Peter Quill's depiction onscreen. First thing's first - the "big event" teased in solicitation text for Nova is going to spin out of the series' launches and Marvel's Free Comic Book Day offering, which should probably surprise no one. With rumors that both Thanos and Nova will appear in the Guardians of the Galaxy film, it wouldn't surprise us if the story involved all three groups of characters and it would surprise us even less if the immediate speculation hit that the film will be loosely based on the crossover. Which, by the way, will never, ever happen. Here's the bit from Buslov:

Axel confirmed that all three books are heading towards a major Marvel Universe Event later this year, probably late summer. We're talking about after Age Of Ultron, and unrelated to that. And while the name of the Event and what it encompasses are still a mystery to me, I think it's a pretty solid bet that Thanos will be at the center of it. Axel did reveal that like Avengers vs X-Men, there will be a precipitating moment that will bring all the characters together and lead into the Event. And that the top secret (even to me!) Marvel FCBD book has something to do with it.
