Shortly after Edgar Wright walked off of Marvel's Ant-Man due to creative differences with the studio, Marvel's The Avengers director Joss Whedon posted a selfie in which he was holding a Cornetto ice cream cone in the air, suggesting solidarity with Wright.

That's the last we heard from the filmmaker on the matter and Wright has said nothing, save for a Cornetto-themed Photoshop that was soon taken down.

Now the other director most closely associated with Marvel -- Iron Man and Iron Man 2 helmer Jon Favreau -- has chimed in about the loss of one of the strongest voices ever to (for a while) shepherd a Marvel franchise.

"Edgar's a dear friend of mine - I was so looking forward to seeing his version of Ant-Man," Favreau told Shortlist. "All Edgar's films have been studio films, it's not like he's never made one before. I think he's been used to a situation where he can have tremendous creative say around his story and casting, and Marvel has built an entire franchise around their style of telling stories....I know both parties well and I respect his decision to see that he wasn't going to be fulfilled in the process. That's all I can really say."

Favreau, like Wright, has made a number of low-budget, low-expectation studio films in his career, including his latest, Chef, which stars Robert Downey, Jr.

Like everything else that's come out since Wright's departure, it backs up the narrative that Wright felt he didn't have the kind of creative control he needed to make a good film, while Marvel wanted more control so they could make the film feel more consistent with the rest of its slate.
