The original Jurassic Park still holds up from a technology perspective, with its splendid vision of a Dinosaur theme park still as vivid as ever all these years later. That is in part due to its practical effects and work with animatronics two things the director is trying to implement into the upcoming Jurassic World 2.
Director J.A. Bayona is doing press for his film A Monster Calls, which also utilizes animatronics. It's a method he hopes to replicate in Jurassic World 2 (via THR).
"Obviously you don't have real dinosaurs — sometimes you have people playing dinosaurs — but we love animatronics and we're trying to do as much with them as possible. It's complicated because the audience now is so used to seeing CGI that they're sometimes reluctant toward animatronics," he explained further. "But at the same time, I think animatronics bring soul and reality to it. We're trying to find the balance between animatronics and CGI in order to cheat the audience so they don't know what they're seeing."
The untitled sequel will pick up threads from the first Jurassic World, but Bayona also alluded to stronger ties to the overall Jurassic Park canon.
"I think somehow it’s both,” Bayona said. “What we're doing is a sequel to Jurassic World, but it's definitely the fifth chapter of a longer saga. It's very interesting. It's always tricky, but you need to find a balance in what people expect to find, and the new stuff you're bringing to the story. And I think the story is looking for a connection between Jurassic World and Jurassic Park -- more than what Jurassic World did.”
Jurassic World 2 is being directed by J.A. Bayona and stars Bryce Dallas Howard (Claire), Chris Pratt (Owen), Rafe Spall, BD Wong (Dr. Henry Wu/Rumored), Toby Jones, and Justice Smith. The film is being produced by Belen Atienza, Patrick Crowley, and Frank Marshall, with Steven Spielberg, Colin Trevorrow, and Thomas Tull serving as executive producers.
Jurassic World 2 is dated for June 22, 2018.
