In addition to sharing a hug with Captain America: The Winter Soldier star Chris Evans on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno tonight, filmmaker Kevin Smith took some time to talk about his new animated feature, Jay & Silent Bob's Super Groovy Cartoon Movie, with the host. He revealed that he actually hangs out with Jason Mewes more than "He was more like a human time bomb. You didn't really want to hook your fortune to him because he had so much problem with oxycontin and the heroin and stuff--but he's gotten clean, he's got 1,030 days right now, that's awesome," Smith said. "Now we spend so much more time together; we made the flick together; we go out and do Jay & Silent Bob Get Old, our podcast together, we walk dogs together..." He told a story about how when passing motorists see Jay and Silent Bob out together walking small dogs, they do a double take. He related a story about how recently, when his dog got loose and ran away, a woman had stopped and driven Mewes down a hill to get ahead of the running dog. "This lady helped him out man--true superheroics, not costumed antics like this," he joked, indicating Evans. Smith said that Mewes produced the movie on a $69,000 budget "just so I can say 69, noonch--our whole budget is a dopey sex joke," said Smith. "But the movie's really funny. It's about comic book movies and stuff. It takes some pokes at the genre if you will, but it's really fun and tons of love for the genre." "It's not a movie that you want to put on 2,000 screens," Smith said of the animated film. "Ain't nobody going to show up for 2,000 screens but if you program city to city directly to your fan base and stuff--and I find them on Twitter--it works out better. We can pack a house, show the movie and then afterwards we do an episode of our podcast....It's great because it keeps him sober, keeps him working, keeps him from borrowing money from me and then we get to go out in the world and hang out with fans." He added, "The great thing is that for 69k, the moment our shows went on sale, we were in the black. Now it's just printing money, essentially."
