A rather fortunate thing has happened: Netflix has released their first official teaser trailer for Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. And, while it may seem sinister or unfriendly, the special footage has got fans feeling rather whimsical.

If you're hoping to see Count Olaf or the Baudelaire siblings, then you will be sorely upset. The teaser instead features Patrick Warburton playing Lemony Snicket as addresses viewers.

"Once again, I find myself in a dimly lit room talking to a complete stranger," he says. "That complete stranger is you, and the room belongs to Netflix, the company responsible for filming A Series of Unfortunate Events."

"Under ordinary circumstances, this room would be buzzing with activity and excitement," Snicket explains. "But the story of the Baudelaire orphans is so upsetting and utterly unnerving that the entire crew is suffering from low morale - a phrase around here which means 'currently under medical observation for melancholia and acute wistfulness."

However, a sudden voice interrupts Snicket's somber monologue, introducing viewers to Count Olaf's over-the-top laughter. As expected, Snicket seems weary of the crazed character and begs viewers to ignore the show and save themselves from watching the upcoming show.

"Don't make the same mistake that Netflix has and look away before this dire tell is even filmed - avoid the cruel whimsy and whimsical cruelty of what's to come," he says before the set's lights go dark.

After being plunged into darkness, viewers are then shown the series' official logo and premiere date. Netflix will debut their much-anticipated show on January 13, 2017 to the delight of fans.

We first learned that A Series of Unfortunate Events would be coming to Netflix in association with Paramount Television last year. In July, a video titled "An Unfortunate Teaser" was posted to Youtube which teased the show, but Netflix claimed the trailer was fan-made though many are skeptical about that claim.

Later in the year, Barry Sonnenfeld and Mark Hudis were tapped to helm the series. Neil Patrick Harris was cast to play Count Olaf while Malina Weissman and Louis Hynes signed on to play Violet and Klaus Baudelaire.

This spring, K. Todd Freeman was cast as Mr. Poe and Patrick Warbuton agreed to portray Lemony Snicket himself. Production went underway in March, and filming recently wrapped in August.

Of course, this isn't the first time A Series of Unfortunate Events has hit the screen. In 2004, director Brad Silberling released a live-action film based on the novel featuring Jim Carrey, Emily Browning, and Jude Law.

Based on the internationally best-selling series of books by Lemony Snicket (aka Daniel Handler) and starring Emmy and Tony Award winner Neil Patrick Harris, A Series of Unfortunate Events recounts the tragic tale of the Baudelaire orphans -- Violet, Klaus, and Sunny – whose evil guardian Count Olaf will stop at nothing to get his hands on their inheritance. The siblings must outsmart Olaf at every turn, foiling his many devious plans and disguises, in order to discover clues to their parents' mysterious death. The eight-episode series is a Netflix original production, executive produced by Emmy Award winner Barry Sonnenfeld and Daniel Handler, and premieres January 13, 2017 only on Netflix.

Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events will premiere on January 13, 2017.
