LINE Webtoon has successfully created their own burgeoning superhero universe in New Brooklyn, which happens to also be the residence of two new series.
The first series is called The Brooklynite, the third installment in the New Brooklyn series. For those who aren't familiar, the series details the fallout after Brooklyn physically secedes from New York State After those events, superpowered beings pop up at a record pace, but there are only a few who are looking out for the city's best interests, including Jake Jeffries, who becomes the Brooklynite. The official description is below.
The Brooklynite follows Brooklyn cartoonist Jake Jeffries, who gets caught in the fallout of a super-human battle and is irradiated with superpowers. Fraught with "Superman powers and Spider-Man problems," Jake learns to fight crime in his secret identity as The Brooklynite and chronicles his adventures in a comic book series while struggling to lead a dual existence.
"Our readers have fully embraced the New Brooklyn universe with The Red Hook and The Purple Heart," said JunKoo Kim, Founder and Head of LINE Webtoon. "We are excited to continue to expand this fascinating world with The Brooklynite and War Cry and look forward to continuing on adventures with these Brooklyn heroes."
The series was created by Seth Kushner and artist Shamus Beyale, though sadly Kushner, an award-winning Brooklyn-born photographer and comic artist passed away last year from cancer, and the Brooklynite is his final published work.
The second series is actually a spin-off of the previous New Brooklyn series The Red Hook. For those familiar with that series, you will most likely encounter some familiar faces in War Cry.
War Cry takes readers into the aftermath of the alien attack on earth that killed most of America's superheroes. Now an orphaned, teenager named Rajak has mysteriously become the recipient of all of the dead superheroes powers and escaped to New Brooklyn. When he shouts the words "War Cry," Rajak transforms into the perfect war goddess, who is a cosmic resurrection of Ava Blume, formerly known as The Possum and love interest of superhero The Red Hook.
War Cry is written and drawn by Dean Haspiel, who said "War Cry is complex; Romeo versus Juliet but with superpowers. I'm thrilled to see the New Brooklyn universe develop as the characters story lines start to cross over."
New Brooklyn's The Brooklynite is available on LINE Webtoon now and every Wednesday thereafter, while War Cry is looking to launch in 2017. Alongside The Brooklynite, fans will be introduced to several other new series as part of their Launch Week program. Big Jo (Julia Arostegi) hits on Monday, Adventures of God (Kasper and Teo) hits Tuesday, The Brooklynite lands on Wednesday, Mirror (Karl Altstaetter) hits Thursday and Athena Complex (Kaisar) lands Friday.
