Brad Anderson, veteran cartoonist and Marmaduke creator, passed away this on August 30th at age 91.

The National Cartoonists Society confirmed his passing via their website, saying only that Anderson passed away unexpectedly.

Anderson attended Syracuse University on the G.I. Bill, graduating in 1951 with a B.F.A. in Fine Arts with a major in advertising. He worked briefly in advertising but left to focus on freelance cartooning in 1953. From 1954 to 1966, he drew a strip called Grandpa's Boy, which overlapped with his creation of Marmaduke in 1954. Anderson continued to work on the strip until his passing.

In 2010, the same year Marmaduke was adapted into a feature film, Syracuse University unveiled "The Original Art of the Funny Papers," an exhibition of classic syndicated cartoons featuring work by Anderson and fellow Syracuse alumni Greg Walker (Beetle Bailey) and Robb Armstrong (Jump Start).

Anderson has been celebrated throughout his career and won the Milton Caniff Lifetime Achievement Award from the NCS in 2013.
