Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited Comes to iOS and Android, Gets New Name

Marvel's Digital Comics Unlimited program, the groundbreaking digital comics initiative that allows fans to access cloud-based copies of thousands of Marvel Comics as part of a monthly or yearly subscription program, is coming to iPhone, iPad and Android devices, reports Gizmodo. Re-branded as Marvel Unlimited--a less unwieldy name and one that doesn't encourage comics reporters to note the "DCU" connection to Marvel's main competitor in every story about the program, the app is available in the iTunes store now. It's "an extension of the new HTML5 reader that Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited rolled out recently, but much more convenient," says Gizmodo. Android devices will be supported soon, but no specific date is set. Fans who already have a subscription to Marvel Unlimited can use it via the web browser on their Android devices--but it's a frustrating experience and ultimately probably easier to just use your laptop or desktop computer. Subscriptions are $10 per month, or a "limited time" annual subscription for $60 ($5 per month). Marvel says that "most major titles" make it into the system after about six months, although that's not a guarantee and experience dictates it isn't always the case. Whether a Marvel Unlimited rebranding is part of the company's big "Count on Marvel"/Marvel #1/Project: Gamma promotional campaign for SXSW or not remains to be seen.
