While the 2011 movie Real Steel was widely panned during its release, the movie about a robot fighting league might have inadvertently predicted the future. Megabots, Inc., a business specializing in building human piloted robots, announced earlier this week that it planned to start a robot fighting league. The company raised $2.4 million in seed money and was partnering with a law firm with experience in organizing sports leagues to start its international competition.

Megabots was founded in 2014 with the hopes of turning robot fighting into a legitimate sport. Unlike Battlebots or other televised robot competitions, Megabots uses 15 foot robots operated by a pilot inside the machine. Basically, MegaBots is more like a Gundam battle than a remote controlled battle to the death. Megabot's proposed league will be internationally based, with countries sending teams to compete in individual contests. The company has already reached out to several countries to gauge interest in hosting an inaugural robot fight.

Megabots previously made news when it challenged Japanese robotics company Suidobashi Heavy Industry to a giant robot fight. Suidobashi accepted the challenge, although the fight hasn't yet been scheduled.
