While never officially announced, rumors of a planned Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff spotlighting Bobbi “Mockingbird” Morse (Adrianne Palicki) and on again off again husband Lance Hunter (Nick Blood) circulated around the web recently, right up until the rumors that ABC had declined to pursue the project supplanted them.
At today’s Upfronts presentation, ABC President Paul Lee officially acknowledged that such a spinoff was being considered, and explained why the network decided not to go through with it.
"We absolutely love those characters on S.H.I.E.L.D.,'" he said. "We think S.H.I.E.L.D. really hit its creative stride this year. [There's] certainly a possibility of spinning them off. We thought the right time now is to leave them on S.H.I.E.L.D. because we think it's so strong at the moment and then to bring in Agent Carter in the midseason."
It sounds like ABC considered what Palicki and Blood’s characters have brought to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. during Season 2 and decided it was too valuable to lose right now, but don’t rule out a Mockingbird spinoff sometime down the line.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
