If you were a '90s gaming and/or movie geek, you remember the epic event that was the 1995 Mortal Kombat movie adaptation... and the traumatic event that was the 1997 sequel, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. Well, if you didn't live the phenomenon, the good folks over at Screen Junkies are here to help you remember.
Check out the Mortal Kombat movies Honest Trailer!
As is pointed out in the video, the Mortal Kombat movies were actually pretty flimsy, yet still somehow fun. While the soundtrack was classic, the total mismatch of actors and martial artists resulted in bad scenes of both action and drama (that we still somehow enjoyed at the time).
Things really get cringe-worthy when the video digs into the utter disaster that was Annihilation. From the casting changes to visual effects that a film school student would've been ashamed of... there's a reason that we've blocked that movie from our collective memory.
As has become customary, the highlight of the video is the edit job done to show the repetitious aspects of the film. Tournament rules, Kitana's flute melody, and that self-promoting theme song - all of it becomes gold when stacked up in mass.
The video game movie tradition (shame?) continues with the release of Assassin's Creed on December 21st.
