New Alien: Covenant Image of a Bloodied Katherine Waterston

USA Today has released a new high-resolution Alien: Covenant still that features a bloodied Katherine Waterston holding a gun and gritting her teeth through an attack from a nasty intergalactic creature. The site also spoke with Waterston, who shared the film's main theme and explained how her Daniels character — the crew's chief terraformist — is similar to Sigourney Weaver’s iconic Ripley.

“They are both able to somehow think clearly in really shocking, unimaginable scenarios,” Waterston said. “It’s fun to play someone who can thrive in that chaos.”

And like Ripley, a warrant officer-turned-alien warrior, Waterston's self-described “space gardener” will discover how courageous she can be when the lives of her and her crew hang in the balance. This all ties together with the film's theme: “You don’t really know what you’re made of until you’re tested.”

Director Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created, with ALIEN: COVENANT, a new chapter in his groundbreaking ALIEN franchise. The crew of the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world — whose sole inhabitant is the "synthetic" David, survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition. When they uncover a threat beyond their imagination, they must attempt a harrowing escape.

Alien: Covenant opens in theaters on May 19, 2017.
