It's been a long time since the first Spawn movie came out way back in 1997. The movie starred Michael Jai White in the title role of Al Simmons/Spawn. The Spawn movie was actually a modest success at the box office taking in $87 million worldwide on an estimated production budget of $40 million. Considering that there have been other superhero movies that were a lot less successful that are under consideration for sequels, it's a wonder that there hasn't been a Spawn movie sequel yet. So what's been the hold-up on a second Spawn movie? In an interview with Newsarama, Todd McFarlane revealed that the hold-up is that he keeps getting distracted from finishing the script. McFarlane claimed he was "nibbling away" at the script and that he even had an Academy Award winning actor that came out to his offices and begged to be a part of it. So who could be the unnamed Academy Award winning actor that McFarlane is talking about? Well, likely candidates sort of depend on if the actor is interested in the title role, and if the movie will be based on the current Spawn or the original Spawn. Originally Spawn was an African-American male named Al Simmons, but he has since been replaced by a Caucasian male named Jim Downing. Considering how long McFarlane has reportedly been working on a script, one might expect that it would be based on the original Al Simmons Spawn. Also, it's unlikely that an Academy Award winning actor is going to be begging to play a back-up role in a movie, so that would lead to some interesting speculation. Even though McFarlane didn't name any names, the three Academy Award winning names that spring to mind as possibilities are Denzel Washington, Jamie Foxx, and Cuba Gooding, Jr.
