Square Enix's cult hit NIER is getting a sequel, and the company has provided a brand new trailer for the game as well as a release timeframe.
NieR: Automata will hit retailers in early 2017, and it tells the story of three androids named 2B, 9S, and A2. The earth has long since been abandoned by the human race, with what remained heading to and resettling on the moon. The three androids, part of an elite task force called The YoRHa Squad, are sent down to earth to reclaim the world they once called home.
Their opposition is an army of robotic lifeforms, a force that invaded without warning and took their world from them forcibly. While you are trying to rid the earth of their presence, you will start to uncover other aspects of earth that have been lost along the way.
NieR: Automata is being developed by Platinum Games, who in spite of their recent track record with licensed games is truly capable of great things. Hopefully, NieR's focus on action and combat will help to highlight some of Platinum's strengths, but it will need to make sure its narrative is at least somewhat memorable.
That said, hardly any story moments are shown in the new trailer, as it tends to focus on the fast and smooth combat we've seen before, including a snippet of a new boss encounter.
