No Star Trek TV Show Until At Least 2014

In an interview earlier this week with Entertainment Weekly, former Heroes and Pushing Daisies showrunner Bryan Fuller told the magazine that filmmaker J. J. Abrams is the only thing standing between fans and a new Star Trek television show. I can already hear the keyboards clicking with righteous anger and the petitions coming alive. Fuller has reportedly met with Abrams' Bad Robot partner, X-Men director Bryan Singer, and discussed the possibility already. "Bryan and I are big fans of Trek and have discussed a take on what we would do, and we would love to do it," the director told EW. "I don't think anything is going to happen in any official capacity until after the next movie comes out. And I'm sure it would be wisely under J.J. Abrams' purview of what happens. He's the guardian of Trek right now." That next movie is due out in theaters on May 17, 2013, right at the end of next year's television season. It follows that, should Abrams be interested, they could begin development immediately for a series to debut during the 2013-2014 season--but don't expect it. It's entirely likely that if they haven't gotten started already, it's because there aren't any plans to launch a TV show until after the movies lose some steam. The first film made over $250 million and revitalized the long-flagging sci-fi franchise, and expectations are high for the sequel.
