Despite a soft opening at the U.S. box office, Pacific Rim performed well enough at the international box office to earn a sequel. Good word-of-mouth from fans of the film helped propel its worldwide box office to $411 million, which probably helped it to finish right at or slightly above break even.

During an interview with Yahoo, Guillermo del Toro revealed that things are quickly moving forward with the sequel. Del Toro said, "[Pacific Rim 2 is] starting shooting in November."

Del Toro added, "We are deep into designing the robots, the kaijus...having fun planning the battles. We have an epic battle at the end of this that we started to design a couple of weeks ago. We've been up for about three or four months designing, and we start shooting in November."

Pacific Rim 2 is scheduled to be released on August 4, 2017. For other upcoming movies, check out the Comicbook.com movie release schedule.
