Earlier today, Star War's actor John Boyega posted a leather-bound script for the Pacific Rim: Maelstron on his personal instagram confirming the title for the long-awaited sequel.

Now, Director Steven S. DeKnight (Marvel's Daredevil) has officially confirmed that Pacific Rim: Maelstrom started filming today with a photo posted to his personal twitter account.

The sequel to the 2013 sci-fi film featuring giant robots battling giant monsters, has seen its fair share of ups and downs since it was announced in 2014. The highly-anticipated sequel was originally scheduled for an April 2017 release before being pushed back by Universal Pictures to August 4, 2017. Back in January of this year, the film was officially shelved and lost in production hell.

In February, new director Steven S. Deknight took the helm and previous director and horror-master Guillermo del Toro stayed on to produce.

Finally, the day has come and filming has begun!

Comicbook.com recently spoke to Boyega's co-star in Maelstrom, Levi Meaden, who expressed his excitement about the new team:

"It's a new team, a great team. We got Steven DeKnight who just did the last season of Daredevil. They're taking it in a whole new direction and there's a lot of stuff going on. I'm just excited to get out there, see the set, see what we're dealing with," he said. "It's going to be a lot of fun! I'm super excited, stoked, and kind of aghast at the whole thing!"

Although we won't be seeing Charlie Hunnam return to reprise his role from the first movie, John Boyega is playing the son of Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba) and Cailee Spaeny is playing the female lead with Levi Meaden and Jing Tiang co-starring.

Although we don't know much concerning the plot of Pacific Rim: Maelstrom, we can expect more details to roll in now that production has officially started! Oh, and big robot battles, too.

Pacific Rim 2 will hit theaters on February 23, 2018.
