Peanuts

is coming back to the big screen, and Blue Sky Studios have shared the first two official images from the forthcoming movie. The images (seen above and below) seem to manage to balance the 3-D world that today's computer-animated features demand with the simple, iconic look of the comic strips on which the film is based. It will be a while, obviously, before we know for sure whether that quality remains intact once the images are in motion, but for now...not as bad as many had feared. The last time Charles Schulz's beloved Peanuts characters starred in a feature-length movie was 1980's Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown (and Don't Come Back!!).

It was another twenty years before Schulz's passing, during which time the strip continued to run (the final strip famously ran the week of his death), and since then, nobody had dared make another Charlie Brown movie...until now. "It's long overdue," producer Craig Schulz, Charles's son, told USA Today. "The fans have been asking for a long time, but we held off until the time was right." Schulz says the family has vigilantly protected the integrity of the characters, leading to a cautious approach in taking on any film project. They've also been directly involved with BOOM! Studios's series of ongoing Peanuts comics. "I'm way more protective than my father would have been," said Schulz. "Our number one goal was always to be authentic to his work and legacy." Peanuts, which features a screenplay from Craig's screenwriter son Bryan and his writing partner Cornelius Uliano, will remain firmly in the family even as big studios have to be involved to fund and distribute the film. "With my father's work this is three generation of Shulzes on this film," said Craig.

will open in the US on November 6th, 2015.
