Pokemon: Johto League Champions Comes Out on DVD Today

Although Ash Ketchum's adventures through the Kanto region are still remembered the most fondly by Pokemon fans, many still remember the young Pokemon trainer's journey through the Johto region around the time that Pokemon Gold and Silver first came out for the Game Boy Color. Now, Viz Media is releasing part of Ash's journey through Johto in a single DVD set. Pokemon: Johto League Champions covers Ash, Misty and Brock's adventures from Goldenrod City all the way through his Cianwood Gym Battle. Viz previously re-released The Johto Journeys, the first part of Ash's adventures in Johto, last year.

Although Ash's team doesn't change too much during Johto League Champions (Squirtle and Charizard both left his team during Johto Journeys but returned later in the anime), his Chikorita does evolve during Champions into a Bayleef. Also, Brock's Zubat evolves several times and he finally re-unites with Suzie and returns her beloved Vulpix. Todd Snap, the protagonist of Pokemon Snap, also returns for a three episode arc involving the legendary bird Articuno.

While not the most exciting season of the Pokemon anime, The Johto Journeys is still a great bit of nostalgic fun. As an owner of the previous Viz Media Pokemon re-releases, these DVD sets are perfect for introducing your kids to the Pokemon adventures you grew up with as a kid.
