Will RED 2 be one of the blockbuster movies screening a trailer on Super Bowl Sunday? It could be, after a teaser for the film was officially released online today. Hailing from Lionsgate/Summit, the producers of The Twilight Saga, RED is one of the properties being shopped as a potential television franchise, along with other Lionsgate mainstays like The Expendables and Step Up. For now, though, it's a big-budget blockbuster, which sees most of the original cast returning and those who didn't replaced by Catherine Zeta-Jones and Anthony Hopkins. Neither of the new additions get a ton of screen time in the trailer, with Hopkins relegated to a creepy, momentary shot that brings out his Hannibal Lecter side...but Zeta-Jones does get to upset the romantic chemistry of the cast a bit. The film, which is set in the same world as the comic books by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner but not based on any story they've written, is set in Europe and seems to center around Helen Mirren's Victoria accepting a contract to kill Frank Moses (and, seemingly by extension, Marvin Boggs and Sarah Ross, who never leave his side during the trailer). There's certainly some of the humor from the original on display, although it seems as though Willis is back in his wheelhouse with a bit more on the order of action and quips, while the heavy comedy lifting is left to John Malkovich and Mary-Louise Parker, each of whom get at least one great line in the trailer. The film is directed by Dean Parisot, best known to fans for his Star Trek parody Galaxy Quest. If you've seen that film and it isn't enough reason to get you out to see RED 2, then it's not likely anything you'll see in the trailer will do it. This is, pretty much, exactly what you'd expect from Parisot working on a film set in the world of RED. RED 2 opens August 2. Check out the trailer below. It's probably worth mentioning that this is the second comic book movie loosely adapted from the work of Warren Ellis that will be released to theaters in 2013; the other, of course, is Iron Man 3, which draws much of its inspiration from Ellis's Extremis storyline.
