Robert Downey Jr.'s Drug Convictions Pardoned By California Governor

Gov. Jerry Brown of California has awarded Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. a full pardon for his drug convictions from the 1990s.

"By completion of his sentence and good conduct in the community of his residence since his release, Robert John Downey, Jr. has paid his debt to society and earned a full and unconditional pardon," the pardon reads.

Downey was arrested for multiple crimes from 1990-2001, each related to drug and alcohol abuse or breaking parole for previous crimes. He sentenced to a three years in prison in 1999, but was released in 2000.

The pardon is purely symbolic, as it does not actually remove the convictions from Downey's record. To be eligible for such a pardon, an individual must have been out of prison for at leat 10 years, not committed any new crimes since being released, and have been granted a Certificate of Rehabilitation by the court.

Downey has certainly turned his life around since the years these crimes were commited, becoming poster boy for Marvel's Cinematic Universe when he starred as Tony Stark in Iron Man in 2008.
