co-writer Roberto Orci is said to be lobbying hard to direct the film, according to Variety. Orci is parting ways with his longtime writing and producing partner Alex Kurtzman so that they can each pursue their own motion picture projects (they will continue to collaborate on television projects). Orci has put all of his focus on Star Trek 3, hoping to land the job of director. If he got the job, it would make Star Trek 3 Orci's directorial debut. Orci's inexperience has made Paramount Pictures nervous about the idea, but Orci is said to have the support of co-producers J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot and David Ellison's Skydance. Fans have been wondering who would step in to direct Star Trek 3 ever since J.J. Abrams was announced as director of Star Wars Episode VII and it became clear that he would not have time to sit in the director's chair on both projects. For his part, Kurtzman is being considered to direct Venom, the Amazing Spider-Man spinoff film that he and Orci co-wrote last year. Orci and Kurtzman have previously worked together on films such as The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Transformers, and Star Trek: Into Darkness and co-created the television series Fringe.
