Last June, Guillermo del Toro revealed that he had been secretly working on a Pacific Rim 2 script with Zak Penn. That is the screenwriter who previously worked on Elektra, X-Men: The Last Stand and the first draft of The Avengers - before Joss Whedon took over writing duties.

In a recent interview, Penn shared a few details about the Pacific Rim sequel. The script isn't done yet. Penn has been passing it back and forth with Guillermo. What can fans expect from the new movie? "There's going to be a lot more about the Kaiju and their origins, and the world will be in a very different state when we get to this movie," Penn told The Mary Sue. "He and Travis created this enormous universe that's pretty much like multiple movies smashes into one. So with Pacific Rim, you could just assume that all the specific tropes of the movie, like the giant robots and the giant monsters and all the technology around it, is going to be explored in more depth. That's just where we're going. But I'm not going to tell you the story cuz that would just ruin it."

Besides Pacific Rim 2, Guillermo has been developing an animated series based on the property. Penn says Guillermo wanted him to be privy to all of the information from the animated series when writing the Pacific Rim 2 script as there will be a connection. "He's got some amazing stuff that's in the animated series that definitely informs what's going on in the next movie," Penn revealed.

Who will be returning for Pacific Rim 2? As of right now, we know Jaeger pilots, Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) and Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi), are involved as well as the scientists Dr. Newton Geiszler (Charlie Day) and Dr. Hermann Gottlieb (Burn Gorman).

Pacific Rim 2 will land in theaters April 7th, 2017.
