Space Battle Lunchtime brings the addictive genre of cooking competitions to comics, and I have to say my comic reading life is much better for it.

Written and drawn by Natalie Riess, the book is at its heart a fish out of water story, but done with an absurd amount of charm. Space Battle Lunchtime stars Peony, a chef at a petite little bakery. While her day starts out ordinarily enough, things get weird when a frog-like alien shows up and reveals to Peony that the world is much bigger than her small bakery on earth, and at the center of this new world is a cooking competition.

Sentences like that are one of the main reasons I continue to love comics, and Space Battle Lunchtime strikes that lovable chord all throughout. Peony is the definition of the word likable, and the reader can't help but root for her. Amiable without being a pushover, and being a bit on the reserve side doesn't stop her from recognizing what an opportunity this is and leaping in head first.

After we meet a few more cast members, the cooking duel is on, complete with an Iron Chef-like "secret ingredient", though there aren't any back-flipping chairmen, at least not yet. I think it was when Riess made the "Snakes on a Flan" pun that the book truly won me over. Puns are sort of my thing.
