Star Trek Beyond Fresh Rating

Star Trek Beyond is the first of the new series to not be directed by J.J. Abrams, but that isn't stopping the third entry in the science fiction franchise from receiving a great deal of praise from critics.

In fact, the movie is reviewing so well it has earned a 91% fresh rating on movie review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. The Justin Lin-directed film has been praised as the sequel that fans really wanted to the original reboot in 2009.

Many reviews make reference to how the series once again feels like true Star Trek, such as Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune. "Lin's movie works best when approached as a relaxed, somewhat playful two-hour expansion of one of the old '60s episodes."

The same goes for Scott Mantz of Access Hollywood. "Beyond goes from being a fun action movie to a great Star Trek movie, and one that's the closest of the reboots to capturing the spirit of the original series."

The same enthusiasm was seen directly after early screenings of the film on social media, and it looks as if the momentum is in the right direction.

Star Trek Beyond once again brings back Chris Pine (Captain Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Zoe Saldana (Uhura), Karl Urban (Bones), Simon Pegg (Scotty), John Cho (Sulu), and Anton Yelchin (Chekov), while also enlisting the services of Idris Elba as the main villain (Krall) and Sofia Boutella as the mysterious Jaylah.

Star Trek Beyond hits theaters on July 22nd.
