Hold the presses--while we thought we had sussed out the film's release date, and many fans were expecting a May 2015 release for the film in keeping with the franchise's history, Comic Book Movie has noticed that some of the stories about Star Wars Episode VII director J.J. Abrams are suggesting that he might delay release of the film past 2015 altogether. "Episode VII is set for release in 2015, but sources say Abrams has not committed to that release date, meaning the date could be changed if the development process requires it," says a paragraph in a story about the signing from The Hollywood Reporter. With Paramount Pictures confirming yesterday that they plan to use Abrams on the next Star Trek and Mission: Impossible sequels, as well as at least one and possibly two new television projects produced by Abrams going to pilot this year, it stands to reason that 2013 could be lost time for the director, especially the first half while he's out actively promoting Star Trek Into Darkness. Some of that time will be taken up doing things that the director isn't, strictly speaking, needed for, like Michael Arndt finalizing the script and behind-the-scenes work by Lucasfilm and Disney to get the elements they already know they want into place. Still, given the fact that much of the time spent on films like this is in post-production, a delayed start to filming could cost the movie dearly. A delay would also make Star Wars Episode VII unquestionably the Big Fish of the 2016 movie season, whereas 2015 is already a pretty crowded field, with Pirates of the Caribbean 5, The Avengers 2 and Justice League all scheduled or rumored to be hitting theaters.
