It looks like sometime Monday the domestic box office will have a new champion. Over New Year's weekend, Star Wars: The Force Awakens continued to rule the box office, bringing in a $88.3 million. It's the third straight weekend that Star Wars: The Force Awakens has topped the domestic box office. It's also the third straight record weekend for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which now owns the record for best opening weekend, best second weekend, and best third weekend.

The $88.3 million take for New Year's weekend brings Star Wars: The Force Awakens total domestic box office to $740.3 million. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is now firmly in second place, trailing only Avatar. On Monday, Star Wars: The Force Awakens should pass Avatar's domestic box office of $760.5 million. If for some reason, Star Wars: The Force Awakens comes up short and doesn't pass Avatar on Monday, then it will surely claim the record by Tuesday at the latest.

At the global box office, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is currently in sixth place with a $1.51 billion box office. While the film still has a ways to go to claim Avatar's top spot of $2.79 billion at the worldwide box office, it's important to remember that Star Wars: The Force Awakens has yet to open in China. Once it does, the film will likely have a good shot at taking Avatar's worldwide record as well.
