Based on comments from director David Ayer, Suicide Squad's Harley Quinn (Magot Robbie) will resemble the ones seen in DC Comics' New 52 and the 2014 animated film Batman: Assault on Arkham. Those showed Harley gaining some much needed self-esteem and independence -- no longer The Joker's doormat. "It's about her breaking free of The Joker and becoming this fully actualised, independent person," Ayer said in the new issue of Empire. "That really is a metaphor for everyone's journey here."

Another similarity to the New 52/Assault on Arkham' Harley is that she'll being getting cozy with Deadshot (Will Smith). "Harley is the biggest troublemaker, but Deadshot's actually eyeballing her a little bit," Smith revealed. "There's a pretty ragged romantic triangle there." The Joker (Jared Leto) won't be pleased about that.

As for Smith's sharpshooter, we'll find out early on in the film how he ended up in his current predicament. "As the movie opens, he has a really big career score," he explained. "He's looking to turn over a new leaf with his daughter after the hit, but it goes wrong. It goes terribly, terribly wrong. And it lands him in Belle Reve for life."
