Terry Moore on Rachel Rising #28: "I Think You Should Be Very Worried"

There's something ominous on the horizon in the most recent issue of Terry Moore's Harvey Award-winning Rachel Rising -- and it isn't the guy who apparently has a collection of human heads ina  large cooler on his porch.

The gang is back in action and beginning to build toward the next, big adventure -- and it seems as though Zoe knows much more than she's letting on.

There's a lot going on here. There's Rachel using her "deadsight" to confirm that a suicide victim was in fact a murder -- and coming away with some surprising results. There's Johnny cluing Rachel in to the fact that somebody has been killing people and leaving fake suicide notes identical to the one they discovered during their battle with Lilith. There's the first appearance of a character who's been missing for a long while now, giving an insight into the kinds of friends Jet had even before she was undead.

And Terry Moore joined ComicBook.com to talk about all of the above.

Remember that these conversations are spoiler-heavy. If you haven't read Rachel Rising #28 yet, go buy yourself a copy (you won't regret it!) and read along with us.

With the short skirt and the headband and all that, this feels like the first time tht we've seen Rachel dressed to be "pretty" in the series. Is that a fair assessment?

I don't know how to answer that. You're on your own there.

After the "Dark Knight" remarks by Zoe, is it normal that I read the rest of Rachel's lines in that scene in the Christian Bale voice?

Yes, that is what I was hoping for.

How did it come to pass that Louis and his head collection made the cover of the previous issue but didn't appear, and then are prominently featured this month?

That's my impeccable timing. As you probably know, the covers are drawn years in advance in order to solicit the book in Diamond Previews. Diamond requires information and cover art for a book decades before it actually ships. So naturally all the solicitation copy is a complete lie and the actual cover is anybody's guess. I've already had to solicit Rachel Rising #263 for March 2023. That's how far in advance you have to solicit.

Also, like Ray, is this the first time we've seen Louis since the first arc?

It has been a while. Not sure if it's been that long. Somebody would have to research that.

It's interesting that you use the "like solitary confinement" line. I once knew somebody who really did have his own way of talking about certain things, and he would explain it as time he spent in solitary. Where had you heard about that phenomenon?

I'm living it! I live like a monk with my work. After many years it really changes you and the way you see the world.

I forget who knows what sometimes, and Johnny not knowing about Zoe's true nature threw me a bit. Is it hard to keep track sometimes for you?

Yes. I'm always having to double check myself on continuity.

Glad to see Johnny address my question about the notes and the cops this issue. Is it tough when fans or reporters ask you questions not to just say, "It's in the next one?"

I'm used to it. Seems like every issue I've ever made had a leading question and half-answers. When you read the book all at once, it's called a page-turner. When you read it a chapter every 6 weeks it's called infuriating.

Johnny is quick on the uptake; her sussing out how Rachel's powers work isn't the first time she's made a big intuitive leap like that. Is she ever going to get one really wrong?

I'm sure she will, she's human. But she has a bright mind and the leaps of logic are second nature for her.

What Rachel sees isn't admissible in court, of course; are they going to be able to catch the wife?

Oh yes, of course! Here's how. See, she goes into town and the police are waiting there with water balloons and…. Do you really think I'm going to answer that?

How was she able to see the wife's motivations by going in thruogh the husband's head?

She didn't see the wife's motivation. The wife was filled with Malus' hatred and the moment of her own possession at the priest death scene. Rachel saw that during the act of murder her own husband. Rachel put the rest together.

Zoe certainly seems to know more than she's letting on here. Is that something to worry about down the line, in terms of how she might react?

I think you should be very worried.
