How does a movie have so many villains, deal with a relationship with (and potential loss of) Gwen Stacy and still find time to develop Mary Jane Watson? Apparently, it doesn't. Coming on the heels of the news that Marc Webb's "trilogy" of Amazing Spider-Man films will go for at least four movies (whether Webb will stay on board for all of them is not clear), Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Shailene Woodley, who plays Mary Jane Watson in the franchise, will no longer appear in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, having been bumped to the third film, CBM claims. In its cover story on Divergent, the young adult novel adaptation in which Woodley is starring, the magazine revealed that her appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has been called off--and while she's back in Amazing Spider-Man 3, it's not yet clear whether they'll reuse the footage shot this year or start anew. In our opinion, the latter is more likely; fan-shot photos and video drew negative reactions to Woodley's appearance, and if Webb and the studio are at all sensitive to that, it would be hard to work around making some changes--and young cast members looking a year or two older--before the 2016 release of the third film. "Of course I'm bummed," Woodley admitted to EW. "But I am a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason...Based on the proposed plot, I completely understand the need for holding off on introducing [Mary Jane] until the next film." The Entertainment Weekly with the Divergent cover story will be on the stands Friday.
