superhero movies rule the box office

While Warner Bros. has been running an extensive campaign to get The Dark Knight Rises considered for as many Oscars as possible, Disney hasn't really pushed The Avengers for the same consideration. And as far as we know, Sony hasn't promoted The Amazing Spider-Man in the Oscar race either. However, all three films are already in the running for an Oscar nomination in the Visual Effects category for the 85th Academy Awards®. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced today a list of 10 films in the running for the award. The films are The Amazing Spider-Man, Cloud Atlas, The Dark Knight Rises, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, John Carter, Life of Pi, Marvel's The Avengers, Prometheus, Skyfall, and Snow White and the Huntsman. Only five of the listed films will make the final cut and receive official Oscar nominations. In order to select the five, all members of the Visual Effects Branch will be invited to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the 10 shortlisted films on Thursday, January 3. Following the screenings, the members will vote to nominate five films for final Oscar consideration.
