The Jungle Book Sets Records in India Box Office

The Jungle Book doesn't open in the U.S. until this Friday, but the film, starring Neel Sethi as the young Mowgli, opened early in India, and it has been an extremely good decision for Disney. The film, a live-action and CGI remake of the Disney animated classic, has set multiple records already for a Hollywood film in the country.

In its opening, The Jungle Book became the highest-grossing Hollywood film in an opening weekend in India. The movie also set the record for a single day in a Hollywood release in India with a Sunday gross of 16.50 crore, or approximately $2.5 million. The film grossed approximately $6.03 million in its opening weekend over all.

The movie also has legs in India, with an incredibly strong Monday - just 25% shy of Friday's haul. With about a 50/50 split between subbed and dubbed screenings, Indian film analysts expect the film to continue going strong for several weeks. It's also a critical hit there, "universally appreciated," according to boxofficeIndia.com, with the film doing well in all regions of the country.

This all bodes well for Disney's worldwide release of the film, as it hits North American and many other markets on Friday, April 15, 2016. The movie is being well-received by critics [Read our The Jungle Book review here!], and a sequel has already been greenlit at Disney.
