Speaking to Empire Magazine, Phil Lord and Chris Miller have implied that the sequel to The LEGO Movie will take place four years after the events of the original, and will again feature the young boy from the film's surprise meta-plot.

"Well I don't want to give you spoilers," Miller said, when asked about what he and Lord are hoping to explore in the sequel, "but we were really interested in what happens to that boy who's in the meta story in the first movie when he's four years older. When he's an adolescent how does that change his point of view?"

The film will still feature the characters from the LEGO universe, of course, who have also grown up in their own ways.

"Emmet, for example, was in an existential crisis of having seen another dimension and was questioning the whole point of his existence," Miller says.

The LEGO Movie 2 is scheduled for release in 2018.
