The Wolverine Trailer Banner

As the last of the summer's big superhero movies to debut a trailer, many fans were worried that The Wolverine trailer wouldn't live up to expectations. Even though it did reasonable well at the box office, X-Men Origins: Wolverine was considered to be a disappointment by many fans. With The Wolverine trailer being delayed, many were worried that was an indication that 20th Century Fox had problems with the movie that were still being ironed out. However, director James Mangold assured fans he was just cleaning up special effects and the trailer would be worth the wait. Now, with two versions of The Wolverine trailer having arrived today, what's the verdict? Was it worth the wait? The virtually unanimous opinion among fans seems to be The Wolverine trailer looks tremendously better than the X-Men Origins: Wolverine trailer. Director James Mangold seems to have succeeded in creating a grim and gritty take on Wolverine. Just on the surface, the visuals blow away anything that fans have previously seen in a Wolverine movie. For a superhero movie, it also has a very real world look, similar to the tone and feel of The Dark Knight trilogy. The Wolverine sort of looks like what you would expect and hope for from the director that was behind 3:10 to Yuma. Another thing that jumps out from the trailer is that Hugh Jackman didn't mess around when it came to getting into shape for this movie. The 44 year old appears to be in the best shape of his career, and he now looks more the part of Wolverine than he ever has before. There also seems to be a recent trend of superheroes with beards, and the Wolverine wears his beard well. Our favorite scene in the trailer was when the shaggy-bearded Wolverine walks into a bar, gets hit with a glass bottle, and then calmly pushes glass out through his cheek. Of course, not everyone may have seen that scene. One thing that is creating some debate is that 20th Century Fox released both a domestic and international version of the trailer. In what seems to be the majority opinion, the international trailer was way better than the domestic trailer. We're not sure why the reason for the two different trailer, but maybe 20th Century Fox needed a toned down version to get a PG rating on the trailer to release it domestically with GI Joe: Retaliation. As far as plot that's always a difficult thing to judge from a two minute or so trailer. On the plus side, the dialogue is not hokey or campy. Thinking back to the first Green Lantern movie trailer, there were moments that made fans groan that the movie wasn't taking itself seriously, but there is none of that with The Wolverine. As far as storyline, the trailer reveals that the plotline will revolve somewhat around Wolverine losing his healing factor. Some fans have expressed concern about this plot point because it takes away an integral part of what makes Wolverine actually Wolverine, but other fans feel it will add an element of excitement and danger. The idea of Wolverine losing his healing factor definitely has fans talking, and one of the chief goals of any good trailer should be to get fans buzzing.
