Chris Carter, creator of The X-Files and Millennium, will follow up his return to TV on Amazon's The After (which was just ordered to series) with Area 51 (working title), a new, scripted drama series he's developing for AMC with The Walking Dead Executive Producer Gale Anne Hurd, the network announced today. Based on the New York Times best-seller Area 51: An Uncensored History of America's Top Secret Military Base by Annie Jacobson, the network describes the series as "a contemporary conspiracy thriller revealing the true story behind the infamous Area 51, America's most mysterious military installation." Carter has explored Area 51 in fiction before: Scully and Mulder went there in the two-part, sixth-season episode of The X-Files titled "Dreamland" and "Dreamland II." That episode was co-written by Vince Gilligan, a staple at AMC best known for having created The Lone Gunmen and Breaking Bad. Gilligan is developing the Breaking Bad spinoff Better Call Saul for AMC's fall lineup, as well.
