Thor Guardians of the Galaxy

Brian Michael Bendis, who writes the Guardians of the Galaxy comic book series, has been dropping a lot of spoilers about his comic series lately. Could any of those spoilers potentially give us insight into plans for the Guardians of the Galaxy movie? We've already detailed why Iron Man joins the Guardians of the Galaxy in the comic books, but that's not all Bendis revealed in the interview posted by Westfield Comics. Bendis also presented an interesting explanation of how Earth is viewed in the rest of the galaxy. Bendis said, "Right away in the first issue, and we've been hinting at in some of the other books, there's something going on with the Earth. The Earth is clearly a very valuable jewel in the galaxy and why it is and what it is we'll be laying out in the very first issues. Because Earth is such a cauldron of mutants, Eternals, Phoenix Forces, Infinity Gems, and all this stuff that's going on, the other galactic civilizations look at Earth like it's a madhouse. We look like cavemen with machine guns. So there's two things they could do; they could either blow it up or they could say, 'New rule. No one's allowed to touch Earth. We're poking at it too much. There's too much interaction. The Skrulls invaded. The Kree do genetic experiments on them. It's too much. By the time Earth is able to join the cosmic civilization, they're going to come at us like paranoid barbarians and they'd be completely right. Every five seconds we're doing something to them. New rule: everybody leaves them alone.' With that rule comes, of course, people who do not follow the rules like Thanos, the Badoon, and the other civilizations that are going to try to make a grand play for the Earth. That's where the Guardians come in because they get wind that this is happening and the new rule has put a target on the Earth. And the Guardians will be intercepting whatever they can." It's been rumored that Thanos will appear in both the Guardians of the Galaxy movie and the Avengers 2. Could the perception of the Earth that Bendis is describing for the comic series also be the perception of the Earth in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? From what we know so far, it sounds like it would apply both in comics and on film. Could the comic book series also offer any clues as to what other villains could factor into the Guardians of the Galaxy movie? According to Bendis, "I think the big bad of the book is Peter's father, the King of Spartax who, just because he's won the war and has the gleaming, wonderful society that he's in charge of, is the worst of the barbarians. With that, we're building him up into almost a Lex Luthor or Norman Osborn type of character who's machinations and cosmic chess playing is going to be a constant source of trouble for Peter and the Guardians." As far as other new characters showing up in the comic, Bendis confirms, "Yes. There's plenty of opportunity. Actually, there's stuff going on in Thor right now which we'll be touching upon as well. Also, these aren't going to be the only Guardians that are on the team. There's going to be some new members joining as the series continues on." Bendis' comment on Thor is interesting, because in addition to Iron Man 3, Marvel Studios is also releasing Thor: The Dark World before Guardians of the Galaxy. If rumors of Iron Man 3 tying into Guardians of the Galaxy are to be believed, could Marvel Studios also try to tie in the Thor sequel in some way. Plus, the indication of other members joining the team is revealing, because there's been a ton on online speculation about the possibility of Nova appearing in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Now, what happens in the comic might not necessarily happen in the movie, but if Marvel's whole goal is to create synergy between the movies and the comics, then some of what transpires in the comic is likely to be set-up for the big screen version.
