HBO has tapped Oscar nominated actor Bradley Cooper to develop the 2016 Pulitzer-Prize winning nonfiction book by Joby Warrick "Black Flags: The Rise Of ISIS." Cooper will executive produce alongside the "Hangover" director Todd Phillips via the duo's Joint Effort production banner, according to Deadline.

Best-selling author Greg Hurwitz is writing the adaptation, and will serve as an executive producer. Hurwitz previously penned the screenplays for movies such as "Orphan X," "Wolverine," and "X-Men Forever." The project will be directed by Tim Van Patten ("Game of Thrones", "Boardwalk Empire"), who will also be credited as an executive producer on the series.

"Black Flags" details the story of the rise of ISIS all the way from its origins in a remote Jordanian prison to the widespread terrorist organization that it has become today. The story also highlights the small group of American and international agents who have been tasked with shutting ISIS down.

Cooper reportedly sought out author Joby Warrick with a limited series in mind for the small screen. He and Todd Phillips then met with Warrick in his hometown to pitch the idea for a collaboration on the series.

As the looming threat of ISIS continues to spread across multiple continents, "Black Flags" could not be more timely. The terrorist organization has recently claimed responsibility for attacks on cities all over Europe.

The Joint-Effort production banner was formed when Bradley Cooper and Todd Phillips merged their Warner Bros.-based production companies back in 2014. On August 19, the production company will be making its first movie release called "War Dogs" starring Jonah Hill ("Superbad") and Miles Teller ("Whiplash").

Do you look forward to watching Bradley Cooper and Todd Phillips' mini-series adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize winning book Black Flags by Joby Warrick?
