SPOILER WARNING FOR SEASON ONE OF STRANGER THINGS ON NETFLIX
While the second season of Netflix’s hit series Stranger Things hasn’t officially been ordered just yet, both the streaming service and series creators, The Duffer Brothers, are treating the matter as if it is just a matter of time. For some fans, the show’s second season will be an opportunity to right one major wrong from Season 1.
Though she didn’t have a lot of screen time, Barbara, played by Shannon Purser, quickly became a fan favorite character on Stranger Things, largely thanks to her no-nonsense, strictly common sense outlook on high school social life, and her total confidence in being who she is. Or, well, who she was. Barb met an unfortunate end during Stranger Things’ first season when a denizen of "the upside down" dragged her into the shadow dimension and devoured her.
Some fans took issue with how the series treated Barb’s death. While the show’s entire narrative was driven by another missing child, Barb’s death was barely acknowledged by comparison. The Duffer Bros. own up to this issue and promise to address it in the next season, though that doesn’t mean resurrecting Barb.
“I can’t see it happening,” Matt told IGN. "But Barb will not be forgotten. We’ll make sure there’s some justice for Barb. People get very frustrated, understandably, that the town doesn’t seem to be really dealing with Barb. That stuff is all happening. We’re just not spending any screen time on it.
"It’s not like her parents are like ‘Oh Barb left. She died!’ Season 1 actually takes place over the course of six or seven days – it’s a really short period of time. So part of what we want to do with hypothetical Season 2 is to explore the repercussions of everything that happened.”
However, there is one presumed dead character who could make a return, and that’s the Season 1 antagonist, Dr. Brenner.
“I would say that if we were going to kill Brenner…as an audience member watching the show, if that was his death, that would be very unsatisfying to me – when the monster jumps on him and we cut away. He would deserve much more than that as an ending. So yes, there’s a possibility of seeing him again.”
Purser’s character on Stranger Things may not be making a comeback, but the actress is campaigning for an even bigger role, that of Squirrel Girl in a Marvel movie. Of course, she’s got some heavy competition in Anna Kendrick, who also has the backing of Edgar Wright and of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo.
